In the next week you should see copies of the Spring issue of Quilts and More magazine hit stands. It will have one of the above covers. They are the same issue just different covers. I have a quilt in this issue. It is a bow tie quilt and at first glance might seem a little out of my box.

It is made with a polka dot background. The bow ties are made of big dots and lively prints. I love this quilt! I tend to work with muted shades and go for a folky, vintage feel but there is a story here. This quilt was inspired by a quilt made by my great grandmother Minnie Dougherty. I never met her in person but I have a connection with her through the quilts she made and left behind. I have a collection of tops that she made late in her life. They are all made from feed sack scraps and sewn by hand. She was an extraordinary piecer. Her stitches are nothing short of amazing. Especially since her sight was so poor that all the grand kids threaded her needles for her.

This is her quilt. Isn't it amazing? It has such energy and that is what I wanted to recreate in my quilt. Thus the busy prints. Hers is not only pieced by hand with feed sacks but she pieced hers the hard way with little set in seams. My version is very fast and easy to piece. I think she would be pleased with my attempt to reproduce her work.

Wow! You guys amaze me. I am blown away at the number of you who took the time to comment. I read every comment and appreciate the feedback. As an author it is important to know what people want to see when they are looking for a book. I am glad to see that the biggest majority of you buy from quilt shops, whether brick and mortar or online. My books are published by KC Star and they do not distribute to places like Joann's or Hobby Lobby. Looks like I am safe since we are in shops and Amazon. Seems like a lot of you go to Amazon! I thought I would post a photo of the whole spring quilt "April Showers" since I have had some emails about it. Isn't it fun?

Hartfield Block 7 - A Day Late

Holy Cow! I totally lost track of the days and did not post the new block. I was here in the studio working all day yesterday and could have posted but I just didn't realize the date. I don't know how we have flown through half of January already.
Without further ado- here we are on month 7. We are doing applique this month and we will actually make two blocks. They are small and fast. Each block finishes at 9" and the placement on these is whimsical. Don't stress over where the leaves go and the stems do not have to be the exact same on both blocks. You can see that my blocks are not the exact same and I prefer them that way for this quilt. This quilt has a very casual feel to it. Keep it fun! Also I wanted to share a photo of Carrie P.'s Hartfield blocks.

Carrie is an applique phenom. Be sure to check out her blog HERE. I love the cheery colors she used. It is so fun to see the different colorways you all use!

A Look at Winter

This is the quilt from the winter section of the book. For some unknown reason blogger has chosen to turn it sideways. So everyone turn your heads far to the left. Blogger is my nemesis which is a big reason I will never win any blog awards!
I love this quilt too. It is a great stashbuster. I used civil war blues in various prints for this quilt and I think it is a quilt for any season. I am an appliquer first and foremost so all those little half square triangles about did me in. I am glad I kept with it though because I am pleased with the way it turned out. There is a wool on wool table mat that complements this quilt.

Postcard Prints

I thought I would share a little about some of the prints in my fabric line. I love interesting backgrounds for my applique and I also love words on fabric. These postcard prints are some of my favorite! I can't wait until I have them to actually sew with. I think they will make fantastic background fabrics. They are available in blue script and red script.

The inspiration for the fabric line was a set of old vintage postcards, thus the name "Best Wishes". This piece was the starting point. I am hoping that all of you will love them as much as I do.

A Peek at Fall

This is Pumpkin Blossoms. It is the fall quilt from the new book. I love this quilt. I was pleased with the colors and the way the top turned out and then once it was quilted I was over the moon. I used Hobbs wool batting for this and then it was custom quilted by Tammy Bush of Form and Function Quilting. It looks amazing. Even though the photo is poor quality, the quilting just pops. There is a wool applique pillow to complement the quilt. I took a look at the Pickledish site and it looks like the book is off pre-order so it should be shipping anyday now.

Why Women Quilt

Last night our guild met for our annual Service Project night and I was reminded of one of the greatest reasons women quilt. For the social aspect. Our guild like most, makes charity quilts for various organizations. Last night was our meeting. We all brought food for a potluck and sat to share a meal. Then the work began, if you can really call it work. We had tables set up around the room and we broke into groups of around 5 to tie the quilt tops that were ready to go. I can't tell you how enjoyable this evening was. We all worked together to transform these tops into quilts to be given to someone in their time of need all the while laughing, sharing and connecting with each other. Quilting brings people together and forges a bond. I am thankful for all my quilting friends. I have come to know so many wonderful people that I might never have met if not for our shared love of quilting.

It's That Time Again!

It is time for the next issue of Primitive Quilts and Projects magazine. This spring issue marks one full year of publication. Wow! The year has really flown. I am so thrilled to have been along for the journey and look forward to this next year. I think it is a great magazine that fills a niche that was long needed. The staff at Primitive have been fantastic to work with as well. You couldn't ask for a better group.

This is my project. It is the Madison table topper. It is made of cotton with wool applique and quick to put together. I quilted it using the big stitch method.

Small quilts like this are a great way to change out your decor. I have a stack of small quilts that I change out. Some hang on the wall, some on the table tops and I drape some out of baskets. After working long hours on a big project it is nice to do something small and quick.

A Peek at Summer

Here is a little preview of the quilt in the summer section of the book. It is called Sassy. It was inspired by an antique quilt. It is all hand quilted. I try to make sure that at least one quilt in every book is hand quilted by me. Sometimes that is a lofty goal but so far so good. There is an antique style cross stitch pinkeep that accompanies this quilt. The quilt goes together quickly since the applique is all large pieces and the pieced blocks are super simple. That center block is a 30" square. Until next time.

A Year of Cozy Comforts

I hope everyone had a fantastic New Year. I am pleased to start the new year with a new book. My book, A Year of Cozy Comforts is now available for pre- order at the KC Star site. It will ship out around the middle of the month. I think it will appeal to many different quilters. There are pieced quilts and applique quilts. The projects feature wool applique and cross stitch. There is a quilt, companion project and simple recipe for each season. As soon as my books arrive I will do a giveaway. Here is a sneak peek.

This is a peek at the Spring Quilt. It is called April Showers. It has a pillow that complements it, made from a kitchen towel with wool applique.

This is the first. It is called Winter Pond. It measures 53" x 53". It is hand appliqued and handquilted using the Big Stitch method. All sewing was done by me. Each quilt has the original label that documents it.

The second is Goldenrod. It is wool and cotton applique. It is hand appliqued and the quilting is a combination of machine and hand using the Big Stitch method. It measures 43" x 53". All stitching done by me.

Hartfield Block 6

Here we are on month 6 already!! I don't know where the time goes but it sure keeps going. This month we are piecing and since December is so busy for everyone, we'll keep it simple. We are making 9- patch blocks. You are going to make 4 blocks and join them to
form a row.

Also, here is a photo of how you will join three of the previous months.

The photo is not great because my quilt is further along and I don't want you to see too far in advance. It would ruin the mystery. Block 1 is on the left and joined to the pieced units from month 4. The applique on the right is month 3. Just a little heads up- the 9patch row will be positioned below these blocks. The 9 patch row is longer than these blocks because there will be more blocks added to row. Here is your link.

I was going to post a photo of my Christmas tree but.......

We decided to do a green tree this year instead of the retro aluminum. It is prelit with white lights and I used red, navy and pearl white ornaments. It looked so good until-

Remember her. Well our tree is now decorated with prelit white lights and ONE red ornament. Not kidding. She climbed the tree while we were gone and pulled off EVERY single ornament except one red one at the top. I am leaving it like that until everyone comes over for Christmas, then I will redo it.

An Ending and a New Beginning

This is the second year that I have taught a 10 month BOM. The group was broken into 2 groups who met once a month. Everyone started with little or no applique skills. As each month went along, their skills and confidence grew. This is such a fun class to do. You really get to know everyone and become friends. It is also fun to make a quilt together. I wanted to show how different everyone's blocks were so I have some photos here. These are a few of the students. All heads have been cut off to protect their identities. LOL The coloways go from bold primary colors to Civil War....

They are all beautiful!

I am really going to miss them all! So that is my ending. What is my new beginning? Well.... I have been working behind the scenes to design a fabric line with the lovely folks at Henry Glass Fabrics! The line has a vintage feel of course. It is being released in January. I can't show you what it looks like just yet and I don't have a ship date. I will be back with more details but let me tell you that I am so excited I can hardly stand it. I knew right from the beginning that fabric design was something I wanted to do and now here I am. I have been very blessed and super lucky I think. I am so thankful to all the quilters who have bought patterns/books, come to classes, listen to me speak or tuned in to the blog. Without you guys I wouldn't have made it this far. I owe everything to you guys! That is one of the reasons that I love doing the free BOMs. It is my little thank-you to each of you.

Hartfield Block 5

Hello to everyone. I have been absent for too long. I have had some technical problems along with some other things and have been away too long. I will be back soon with more! Today however we are onto Block 5 of Hartfield. We will be appliqueing stars. These stars are thin, whimsical and slightly romantic stars.
The blocks finish at 6" each. You will need to make 9 and then join them to make one block that will measure 18" finished.
These work up pretty quickly and I found them to be fun to stitch. Here is your link.

Hartfield Block 4

Morning to all. I have to be brief. I am on my way out the door to vend at a quilt show. This month we are piecing again. We will be making 12 flying geese units . These units dimensions are a little different, allowing extra room to keep you from cutting off the points. This makes the units much faster and less stressful. They will sewn to frame Block 3. The particulars are on the pattern page. Here is the Link.

ATTENTION!!!!!

There has been a huge error. This is what happens when I don't have an editor. Block 3 should measure 10" x 18" finished. I posted that it was 10x15. If you have not yet made Block 3 use the dimensions of 10" x 18". If you already made your block then this is what you will need to do- Make 2 extra geese and you will add them and the extra one to the bottom of the block. So you will have the applique block with a row of geese above, a row down the left side and two rows on the bottom. This will make your block the right size and you will be on track. What happened is I was working with two different options and when I posted apparently I combined the two. This will still be just fine. Sorry for the confusion. Good thing you guys pay attention!!

Hartfield Block 3

Hello All!

I am super busy getting the last minute details finished for my next book. We do the photo shoot on Monday. Also, I head out the door in 15 minutes to go teach a class in the next town over. So... I will make this short and sweet.

Here we are on Block 3, seems like we just started. This month is applique again. The blooms are simple wonky shapes that I think are fun. Next month we will piece and I will give you a glimpse of how things are going to fit together. Until then, here is your Link.

Saltwater Taffy

I started cross stitching when I was a Freshman in High School. I was hooked immediately. I had done all types of needlework but this was a true love for me. At that time most stitching was done on Aida with DMC and some were even still using J.P. Coats. I stitched pretty much all the time, kinda like I do with quilting. I was as addicted to collecting all the floss colors as I am to collecting fabric. It got where I knew exactly what a color looked like just by the number. I had all the colors and knew them by heart.

Then things started changing. More and more evenweave and linens were showing up. I loved these, they stitched up so nicely. You didn't see the little "holes" like you did on the aida. Also, something else to hoard! I pretty much use 28ct linen now for everything. Sometimes 32, but I prefer 28. Are you wondering what the point of this post is? Well, here it is. The other thing that changed in the cross stitch industry back then was I stumbled on this new floss. Weeks Dye Works - hand dyed floss. Oh, my, goodness. It was hand dyed.Gorgeous colors that variegated giving an aged look to my pieces. A whole new world opened up. Best of all, this floss had fantastic names for the colors. Who could resist a skein called "Scuppermong" or "Kudzu"?

Now this name thing might not mean as much to you as it did to me. You see one of my favorite things to do in Freshman Biology was to make little color charts. I would mix colors and blend them to create new shades. Then I would invent creative little names for the new colors. Ha! Now you see why I was so excited about this new floss. I thought "Oh fantastic, these Weeks folks are just like me!"

So anyway, in July, I got an email from the folks at Weeks Dye Works. They had a new color of floss that they were launching. They showed a picture of the floss. There was a contest with a prize for the person who came up with the winning name for the new color. I was in Heaven. Here is my chance to name a color for real! I looked at the floss and immediately thought Saltwater Taffy. It reminded me of the pink candy wrapped in the wax paper. Never one to doubt myself. (lol) I sent my email right off to the kind folks at Weeks and told them the name I chose and why. Guess what- I won. They chose to name their new color Saltwater Taffy. I won the first 5 skeins produced and $150.00 worth of floss.

So when you see the new floss remember to think of me and all that practice I got in Freshman Bio.

To Be a Better Blogger

Have you seen this magazine? It is full of blogs. Fantastic blogs. Bloggers who post daily or several times a week. They share tons of info on their blogs and thousands log in daily to see what they are up to. Some have little "Blog Awards" buttons on their side bars....... Oh to be one of those bloggers. I had great inspiration when I started to blog to be one of those blogs. I would post gorgeous photos, write witty little posts about my life and quilting, and thousands of you would follow along...... Then reality set in. The fact of the matter is I don't have that much to share that anyone would care to know about. Sure I have all my quilt stuff but sometimes (like now) I am busy working on things that I can't share with anyone. As for the gorgeous photos, well let's get real here, it's not happening.

Some bloggers share posts about cute things that their kids have done or said. My boys are 17 and 18 and let's face it- the crap they do and say is just not that cute.

Some bloggers do posts about the sweet little animals they share their homes with. Well, this is Nell and since most of the time she behaves like a rabid raccoon, the stories I have about her are not really print appropriate.

Some bloggers post pictures about their beautiful sewing rooms. Let's get real here folks, I am working to make book and magazine deadlines. There isn't any beautiful here right now. Take a look at that shelf and you get the picture of my level of chaos.

I could post about the abscess tooth I had this week and the time I lost dealing with it...you could all post comments about how sorry you are for me.....No, I think not.

I could show you these little half square triangles I have been making but I can't show you anymore of it or tell you about it because it's a secret.

So, to avoid doing a Jerry Seinfeld post about nothing, I will tell you about this. I use Best Press by the gallon to prepare all my fabric before applique. Sometimes I run out and the quilt shops aren't open so I have used Niagra in a pump bottle. Others use it and swear by it. It is under $2, which is a plus. My problem is it stinks. I think it makes my fabric smell moldy.

Solution- Maxx by Faultless.

I ran out of Best Press and had to make a run to Wal Mart. I found this. It is in a pump, under $2 and it doesn't smell moldy. It is actually Lavender Vanilla scented. One of the great things about the Best Press is the scents. Now that I have found this in a great scent and readily available, I may stick with it. I can buy 4 of these bottles for the price of 1 Best Press. So there you have it- my moment of wisdom for the day.

Hartfield Block 2

Here we are at Month 2. I have a few more details for you.

Some have asked about the name- Hartfield. I was watching Jane Austen's Emma as I sketched the quilt. Hartfield was the name of the family home. Hence, the name of the quilt. Aren't I clever?

The quilt will measure 48" x 63". It is a mystery. It will run for 10 months. There will be 5 months of pieced blocks and 5 months of applique. The last month will be the border and it is all applique, so be ready.

You will need 3 yards for the background fabric. It can all be the same fabric or scrappy. Mine will all be the same this time because I happen to have enough fabric. I tend to favor scrappy backgrounds myself. I think it adds interest.

This month's block is a 9-Patch Star. It measures 12" finished and is easy, peasy to put together. The pieced month's will help everyone stay caught up since they tend to be a little faster than the applique blocks. I have everything switched to google docs so there shouldn't be any printing problems. Here's your link.

Frixion Pens

Have you tried Frixion Gel Pens yet? If not, run straight to your local Target or office supply and get a pack. You will love these pens. They are erasable gel pens. The gel ink is thermo sensitive which means it disappears when you iron it.

You can see here that I have written my name with all three colors. I drew over it several times so that it would be very heavy. Watch what happens with one pass of a dry iron.

Just like magic the ink is gone. These are great for marking your embroidery designs and tracing your applique shapes. The lines don't rub off, are easy to see and gone with an iron when you no longer need them. The pack contains 3 pens, purple, pink and red. I think I paid around $5 and something. Not a bad price. That's my 2cents for the day.

Don't forget the new block for Hartfield posts on Monday and Block 1 will be taken down.

Yes, as noted by Cathy the lines return in very cold conditions. I don't recommend them for marking quilt lines. I use them only for applique, (the line gets turned under) and embroidery(you will stitch over the line).

Primitive Quilts and Projects Fall Issue

By now all of you with subscriptions should have received your magazines. Those of you that are still on the fence need to check this one out. I love Fall and Fall decorating. I have a million more decor items for the fall than any other season. I am especially a Halloween freak. Because of all the Fall quilts that I already have, I wanted to make something a little different. I had a beautiful grayed- down blue fabric from Buggy Barn. It has a brown/gold floral stripe running down it. I thought it would be perfect for a Fall quilt. I had gold and orange wool that looked great with the blue and Goldenrod was born.

This quilt is super fast to make. The circles are all made from wool, which really speeds things up. The sashing and piecing is very simple. The quilt measures 43" x 53" and makes a great addition to your Fall decorating.

I rarely make anything from patterns other than my own. I just can't justify the time. That being said, I fell in love with Lori Brechlin's cross stitch project in the issue.

I will not win any awards for photography, for a better view you will have to check out the magazine. I started cross stitching this yesterday. It is a lovely mermaid with a flag and a little ship. I love it and it is really nice to work from a pattern for a change. It will be pretty quick to stitch and gives me a nice break from my work on the book. I will post when it is finished. Hartfield- A Block of the Month

My online Block of the Months have been very popular so I decided to do another. Please read carefully as there have been some changes. The quilt is called Hartfield. It consists of blocks of many sizes and is a mix of piecing and applique. My first love is applique but I also like to piece and really like the mix of the two. Also, I am working against several deadlines and the piecing eases the load a little.

I will post the new block on the 15th of each month. It will be available for free for 4WEEKS ONLY. After that a block may be purchased for $3.00 in the online store. I think 4 weeks gives everyone time to print the page. There will be NO exceptions, sorry, that's how it goes. Big Stitch Workshop

I have finally nailed down all the particulars for the workshop.
It will be Sat. Sept. 24,2011. 9am - 3:30 pm at Fairview United Methodist Church, Columbia, Mo. We will take a 30min. lunch break. You can either bring a brown bag or head out for lunch. There will be a small trunk show of samples using the Big Stitch method at the beginning of the class. This workshop will provide a kit and everything you need to know to hand quilt using the Big Stitch method. If you are interested, you can get the registration FORM here. Fruitful Hands is the new book from my friend Jacquelynne Steves. This book is one that has it all. Beautiful quilts, outstanding recipes and fantastic art by Jacquelynne.

You see, she isn't just an author and quilt designer but she is also an artist and fabric designer for Henry Glass. These are just a sampling of her watercolors from the book.

Do You Big- Stitch?

Once again I am behind on blogging. I am spending most of my time working on the next book and some magazine work. That doesn't leave much to blog about. So, I thought I would do a quick post on Big Stitch quilting. I get alot of questions on this subject. I am currently working on quilting a quilt using traditional quilting methods and big stitching this quilt. I love both equally.

When I first started making quilts many moons ago, I began by hand quilting tops that were made by my grandmother. I fell in love with the process. It is so relaxing and there is something satisfying about feeling those three layers become a quilt.

Big Stitch is done in the same manner as fine quilting with just a couple of differences in supplies.

Your quilt still needs three layers basted together. I am often asked about batting- I use either Hobbs 80/20 or Hobbs Wool. (the Hobbs guy at Market got me hooked on the wool) I use a quilting hoop, size 12". 14" would be better but I am cheap. This one has served me well for 11 years and until it quits working I won't be upsizing. You use the same rocking motion for big stitch as you do for regular quilting.

I use a Roxanne thimble. I bought my thimble about 11 years ago and it is more valuable to me than my jewelry. I had a hard time finding a thimble that worked for me until I found this one. They are sized, and have an opening for your nail. Do not be put off by the price, they are worth every penny and will last for your lifetime. On my finger under the quilt I have a piece of hospital tape. I have a callus on that finger because I quilt alot but even so I use a piece of tape for extra protection. I usually quilt for hours at a time. The tape gives me that and I can still feel my needle.

I am a bit of a thread snob. I love above all others the Valdani hand dyed perle cotton. I use this for all my quilts. It comes in different sizes and is hand dyed. They have a lovely selection of colors. You can find a color to match any project and the variation of the hand dyed threads really adds to your quilting. I use a size 8 for all my quilting.

And that leaves just the needle to talk about. If you asked 5 quilters what kind of needle they use you would get 5 different answers. I have played around with needles to find what works best for me and found that what I prefer is a size 22 Chenille needle. I generally buy DMC brand as it is readily available in my area. This needle has an eye that is easy to thread with the perle cotton, is sharp and is a nice length to get consistent stitches. That is the key to good big stitch quilting- consistency.

The House on Hardwick Lane

I have been busy working away on lots of stuff that I can't show. What do you think about that? I am doing a Halloween stitchery quilt, a Halloween pieced and applique quilt that will be going to the quilter next week and working on the next book. So, since I can't show you any of those things. Here is something I can show. This quilt is called The House on Hardwick Lane. It was inspired by my friend Ann's home on Hardwick Lane. The quilt is finished and the covers are at the printer. It should be available next week. I think it makes a great summer quilt.

It was a lot of fun to make and it goes together quickly. The applique pieces are pretty big and the piecing is super simple. The stars are all appliqued. The center block is a 24" square and the quilt finishes at 52" x 52"

Beasley

This is the last of the new patterns. It is called Beasley. It measures 53" x 53". It is a great stashbuster and is fat eighth friendly. This pattern sold out at Market. It's funny how you never know what people will like. Sometimes your favorite pattern is one you can't give away and a pattern that you think is ok will be a big seller. This time the quilt is popular and a favorite of mine. It is made from Collection for a Cause- Faith. It has a lovely old look and feel.

Spring Patterns

Here is a quick run through of the 4 new patterns. All are now available on the online store. The above quilt is called Rosedew. It measures 51' x 66". It is made of simple spool blocks. The color placement creates a secondary design and adds interest.

This is called Nell. It measures 63" x 63" . Very fast to piece. Big pinwheels set together with pieced sashing.

This is Deck the Halls. It is a layer cake pattern. Great for Christmas. This is made with the soon to be released line from French General.

And this is Oodles of Poodles. It is also a layer cake pattern. It was made with Oasis by 3 Sisters. Very fun French Poodles. This is a great girl quilt. It measures 47' x 47".

The Wonderful World of Moda

I tend to love most of the fabric lines from Moda. Not only are the colors and designs nice but the fabric feels great. This Spring is no exception. I truly loved it all. There are good things coming to a store near you. The Moda theme was a County Fair. They had a ferris wheel and little fair booths. Very creative idea.

The quilt above on the left is made with Sandy Gervais new line. It is a little darker colorway and I love it. Fig Tree is gorgeous. I couldn't stay away from this area. This is the new line from Cabbages and Roses as well as the next French General. I am dying for both of those lines. Also a new line called Circa 1934 from Cosmo Cricket. Very different - in a good way.This is the next Collection for a Cause line - Comfort. I really want some of it. The Collection lines are always my favorites. My new pattern Beasley is made with the Collection- Faith and it sold out at Market. Laundry Basket Quilts has a super new line too as does 3 Sisters. Rather than sound like a broken record I will just end it there.

I have new patterns, layer cake and some pieced patterns. I have posted some of them on the store and will get the others posted on Mon. I will try to do a blog post so you can get a good look at them.

Market, Market

I have been a little lax in posting. I am super tired and blogger has been giving me some problems. I don't have nearly as many pics as I did at Fall Market. Let me tell you, there is a big difference in attending Market when your publisher does all the work and having your own booth. You are pretty much tied to the booth and it is hard to get out and get pictures. Luckily, friends stopped by to visit. This is Sherri from A Quilting Life. This is the first time we met other than online. Jacquelynne Steves of the Noble Wife stopped by as did Sheri Howard and Pat Sloan. So nice to see all of them.

I made a trip to the KC Star booth of course. That being my home base so to speak. They always have a lovely display.

I had to make a stop at Primitive Quilts and Projects. This is Judy and Jenny.

We have worked together on the magazine via email, phone and me shipping quilts but had never met in person. It is so nice to meet people in person. It is also nice to see how much you all are loving the magazine.

Another friend who I had never met in person is Gail Pan.

Gail is super sweet. She is from Australia and has the most lovely quilts and projects. It was alot of work and a lot of fun. I will be back tomorrow with the photos of all things Moda. Off to teach a class.

Adventures of Market

I am behind on my posting. Along with being really busy, blogger was down yesterday and I could not post. When we left home for our trip it was 96 degrees. I had on flip flops and capris. When we hit Laramie Wyoming it was 28 degrees. There was 4inches of snow on the ground and it was snowing, blowing and sleeting so hard you could hardly see. The roads were slick and the hills steep. We drove through about 60 miles of that crap. But we made it and it is gorgeous here.

Thursday morning we started the set up. First the walls had to be made.

I am using hard walls instead of pipe and drape. The paneling is called Coastal Cedar and I love it!

Here are a few shots of the booth as it went together. I have not had a chance to take photos around the show yet.

There are twinkle lights woven through the floral swags which look really cute when they are lit.

After set up, we headed out to the Great Salt Lake. It is absolutely gorgeous. We got in waded and Eric floated. But let me tell you. They warn you about the noseums when you get there, but that in no way prepares you. I have never, seen so many in my life. They literally swarm you. I had little red bug bites all over my forehead. It was crazy.

So far Market has been great. Very busy, the day flew by yesterday. So, that is all for now.

Welcome to the Blog Tour

Welcome to all, old and new. I am pleased to be a part of the 100 Blocks Blog Tour. This is my second time participating and I have to tell you it just gets better. This is my block. It is called Camelia's Basket and can be found on page 28 in the magazine, right at the beginning of the applique section.
Sometimes I think I am pretty clever. Sometimes I am the only one who thinks so. Anyway, here's the story behind the name of my block. Obviously it is a basket of flowers. Said flowers could be Camelias. (Use your imagination here folks.) Also, (here's the clever part) my Great Grandmother's name was Camelia. She lived to be 96 and in the course of her life she outlived 3 husbands. The final husband had the last name of Basket. Oh, alright already.

Back to what you came here for.....

I want to thank you all for hanging in there with me. I have been slow to blog and if you have commented and not heard from me - Sorry! I am cramming to get things done. I do appreciate all comments and after Market will be better about email and posting. Anyway.... here is the finish for Folk Art Tribute!

This is the final block. It finishes at 12" x 48" and goes at the bottom of the quilt. You will need to piece your backing. I used two different prints and joined in the middle. The templates and border instructions are HERE.

The finished quilt is 60" x 72" and has 3 borders.

I think it turned out pretty cute. What do you guys think?

I have been asked if I will do another free BOM- not sure yet. I am going to have to see how busy I am. I am writing 2 books for 2012. Which means I am working on those now. I will get back to you on that. That's all for now. Come back on Tuesday for the 100 Blocks Blog Tour and giveaway.

I wanted to share some of the photos that I have received. This is from Kathy Shaw in Evans Georgia. This is the 3rd quilt that Kathy has ever made and her first applique. Isn't it stunning? I like her version better than mine.

Love the beautiful setting as well. Georgia is one of my favorite places.

The next photo is from Sylvia Broekhuis in the Netherlands. This is her Folk Art Tribute quilt.

She is using the blanket stitch to applique her blocks. So cute!

The next photos are from Shirley Beckett. She has made Patriot- enlarging it for Quilts of Valor. And she has also made Creve Coeur using a line from Kansas Troubles. You should see Shirley's workmanship- outstanding.

If you peak in the right top corner you can get a little glimpse of her Dear Jane quilt. It is to die for. I will have to see if she can send me a photo to share.

Primitive Quilts and Projects

After much anticipation the Primitive Quilts and Projects magazines have shipped and are now in stores and subscribers hands. I am pleased to be a part of this new venture. The photography is outstanding and the projects are as well. The quilt I have in the issue is called Juliet. It is a variation of an old antique Rose Tree block. Applique of course.

Folk Art Tribute

I can't believe we are almost finished! Here is the next to the last block. I think the little sheep is adorable and a must in a folk art quilt. This is the last 12" block. I get alot of emails asking about placement. All the 12" blocks are interchangeable. Place them in the order that looks best for your quilt. I laid my blocks out and moved them around until I found what looked best. The link is HERE. The next block will be a 12" x 48" block that will go along the bottom, just like the one at the top does. You can go ahead and assemble the quilt center if you like since the next block just adds on. I will also give you the border info next month. I would like to see photos of your quilts when you get them finished too. That's all for now. Happy Quilting, Dawn There shouldn't be any problems with the printing. Make sure you have your printer set for no page scaling. Print at 100%. When I go to the link, it prints fine. Let me know if you can't get it to print.

The Quilts From Cottage Charm

I have received several emails requesting a link that shows all the quilts in Cottage Charm. I decided it would be easiest just to post the quilts here rather than send multiple emails with attachments.

The book has three quilts. Each quilt has a companion cross stitch project.

The first quilt is called Vermillion. It is a 2 color quilt of sorts. Red/cream with a smidge of green and yellow in the applique blocks. It measures 64" x 64". The applique blocks are 13 1/2" and the pieced blocks are 9". I used 12 different reds and 2 creams to create interest.

The second quilt is the one that I get asked about the most. It is called In My Garden. It is the "bunny quilt" from the cover. It measures 74" x 74". The blocks are 18" and it is all applique. The third quilt is called Gossamer. It measures 80" x 80". It consists of 81- 8" butterfly blocks. This quilt is an easy one to adjust the size from bigger to smaller or vice verse. This is a great stash buster quilt.

Jenifer Dick

My guild played host this past week to Jenifer Dick. If you remember a couple of posts back I directed you to Jenifer's blog 42 Quilts. She is an author, editor and teacher. She presented a trunk show that showcased her journey as a quilter. From the first quilt she made to the quilts from her books Grapefruit Juice and Sugar and The Circuit Rider. It was a great presentation.

She does the most exquisite machine applique.

However, I always have a million things to take with me and I forgot my camera. So I had to take pictures with my friend Ann's phone. I was also at an odd angle but I think you can still see how beautiful her work is.

Jenifer has a new book that will be out this fall. It is published by the KC Star- so keep your eyes peeled for it.

Folk Art Tribute BOM

Hello Quilters! It's time for the next block in the BOM. This month's block is Heart in Hand. You can't have a folk art quilt without that. The block is 12" x 12". It is a super fast block.
This quilt has went together so fast. We only have 2 more blocks and then the borders. One block will be another 12" x 12" and one will be 12" x 48" just like the pineapple block was. I would like a little feedback from those of you doing this. Has it been too easy- simple? Give me your thoughts. You can find the templates HERE.

Scraps

The dictionary defines the word "scraps" as follows:

–noun
1.
a small piece or portion; fragment

For a quilter it can mean just the piece of fabric you needed to add that pop to your quilt. I use scraps alot since I do so much applique. A small corner can yield several leaves.

However, my scraps are taking over! Moda sends me layer cakes to design with pretty regularly and there is always something left over. At this rate I will never use it all. I have this basket of newer fabric scraps up for grabs. Some pieces are small, some are a whole 10" square. There is Blackbird Designs- Wild Rose and Antique Fair. Tons of French General as I work with those lines quite a bit. Some Buttercup by Fig Tree. You get the idea. If anyone out there would like to have this basket of scraps, (basket not included) leave me a comment and I will send them your way. If by chance more than one of you wants them- I will draw a name next Mon. 28.

I pulled some of it out to give a look at what is in the middle.

Wool and Wool Applique

By now you all know that I love applique. What you may not know is I love to applique with wool, especially wool on cotton. I love mixing the two. The texture of the wool adds so much to even the simplest designs. My next two books (yes, I am writing two books for 2012) will feature several projects with wool. I am also working on a quilt for a certain magazine that will include wool. So I wanted to share with you an excellent source for gorgeous wool.
The above wool arrived yesterday from Cathi at Shakerwood Woolens. She sells wools in fat 1/8s and fat 1/16s. The perfect size for those doing applique and wanting to build a good stash of colors. These are some of the most evenly dyed wools I have seen. From left to right- Dried Cranberries, Pumpkin Patch, Squash and Rose Dark. She also has some beautiful blues and purples.

Aunt Minnie's Melons

The blog posts are getting fewer and fewer as I get busier and busier. There are 10 week til Market. I have 10 patterns to get the samples made for, patterns written and printed. That doesn't even touch the magazine work, classes or real life stuff I have to do. So please be patient.

Thought I would share the next layer cake quilt with you. It is called Aunt Minnie's Melons and is of course a melon quilt. I love this quilt! The melons are a little "chubbier" than the standard melon which makes for easy stitching. This goes together quickly. The fabric is Antique Fair by Blackbird Designs. I am crazy about this line. It has a soft, vintage feel. The little melon blocks are 4 1/2" finished and the quilt is 40" x 40". It is made with just a layer cake, no additional yardage. The pattern covers are at the printer. I will post in the store as soon I get them back.

I also finished the edits for the KC Star pattern. I don't have my copies yet so this is just a pre- corrected cover but you get the idea. When I get my copies and the quilt returns I will post some photos so you can really get a good look. It is a really pretty quilt. This is the one made from Buttercup, that I gave you a sneak peak of a while back.

This is a brief post to address a few questions.

1. For those of you new to the blog. The Vicksburg BOM ended last July. The free pattern is no longer available. I am working on getting it in print sometime this spring. The current BOM- Folk Art Tribute is going on now and all blocks are available.

2. I have had a lot of interest in the background fabric used on "In My Garden" from Cottage Charm. It was a ticking stripe from the Beach House line by Blackbird Designs. That line is no longer available but the line Wild Rose by Blackbird has a similiar stripe in it.

I Left My Heart in Paris

For those of you who commented on the pink fabric from the last post, here it is. This quilt is called "I Left My Heart in Paris". The fabric is the new line from French General called Pom Pom de Paris. It will be in stores in March. I fell in love with this line as soon as I saw it. It is so soft and romantic. I am a sucker for soft faded reds and these are fab.

I have never designed anything for Valentines Day and thought this would be the perfect line. I didn't want it to be too "sweet" and wanted it to be something you could use anytime. I think it turned out nice. This quilt will reside in my bedroom when it is not traveling. It is a great match to the shabby chic style in there.

The pattern uses 1 layer cake and a fat quarter of green. The covers should be ready early in the week and then available for purchase in my online store.

I machine quilted in the ditch to secure the quilt, used pearl cotton and the big stitch method on the applique pieces. Then I stitched a diagonal line across each block using traditional handquilting. What do you think?

New Block- Folk Art Tribute

The latest block is ready. It finishes at 12"x 48". I pieced my background with the seam down the center. You will need to make bias stem using the 1/2" bias tape maker. I used about 21" on each side of the pineapple. I have several photos to give you a good look. Also I have a photo of the layout. Keep in mind that the 12" blocks can be swapped around. Here is the link.

Hope you guys like it. I think it's pretty darn cute, if I say so myself. You will notice I am only showing one version. My schedule is pretty hectic, so for awhile I will only be doing one version until I get caught back up.

Those of you who know me, know that I am a hand quilter. Nothing wrong with machine quilting, just not my thing. I actually started hand quilting vintage quilts before I did much piecing or anything else. One of the things I love about a hand quilted quilt is how soft it is. That being said, it just is not always a reality. With publication deadlines I can't always get it hand quilted. This is especially true with the layer cake patterns. They have a pretty fast turnaround. So I am doing more machine quilting than ever before. Along the way I have learned some things that work for me.

For one, grippy gloves are a great tool. However, they are not all equal. I had a pair for a long time. They were not all that grippy. They started out white and quickly turned dirty and nasty. Seems they absorbed dye from everything they touched. I found these at Market in the fall. They are fantastic. Super grippy and they do not turn ugly. They really make it less work to move your quilt around.

Also I like to quilt with YLI Silk thread. It is finer, doesn't show quite as boldly and leaves the quilt a little softer. If you are not a great quilter it hides your mistakes a little better.(just saying) Along with the silk thread, I keep my quilting further apart and finish with hand stitching accents.

This is a sneak peek at Alyce, the next layer cake pattern. I stitched the background on my machine with the silk and used the big stitch method on all the applique. I love the way this quilt turned out. It is super soft and snuggly. It is made from Buttercup by Fig Tree Quilts. The colors are clear and springy. I can see it draped on the back of a couch or wrapped around a baby. So, I have adapted. One thing I want to make clear - I am not a professional in the area of machine quilting. These are just some of the things that work for me. Do you have any tips to share?

What Season Is It?

I am working on several different projects at this time. Some are being finished, some are being drawn up -yet to be started and some are right in the middle.

I am working on my next book which is a seasonal book. It will have a quilt and project etc. for each season. I am currently finishing the summer project for the book.
I am getting a layer cake pattern ready to go to print with The KC Star. It is a spring design using the bright, cheerful Buttercup line by Fig Tree Quilts.

I am getting the borders on a Halloween quilt for the fall edition of a magazine.And I am drawing up designs for the new Christmas lines I just received from Moda.

It is a bit disorienting.

Best Laid Plans

If you remember, I said I would post one of the really large blocks this month. Well...... with the holidays and other stuff going on it did not happen. Instead you get another 12" x 12" block. Merry Christmas Quilters!

Right now most of what I am working on can't be shown. I am working on 5 new layer cake patterns, next book and a magazine project, so I thought I would share some baking.

These cookies are my "go-to" recipe when I want alot of cookies.

I have a Kitchenaid Artisan mixer and you can see the bowl is full. I don't think I could mix these if I didn't have it. Here's the recipe:

2c.butter

2c brown sugar

2c. white sugar

4 eggs

2 tsp. vanilla

24 oz. choc. chips

3 c. chopped nuts ( I use 1/2 c macadamia, 1c. walnut, 1 1/2 c. pecan pieces)

4c. flour

2 tsp. soda

1tsp. salt

5 c. blended oatmeal

2 tsp. baking powder

1- 8 oz. Hershey bar- grated

Measure oatmeal and grind in a food processor until it is a fine powder. Set aside. Grind the Hershey bar in the same manner and set aside.

Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla. Mix in the flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder and soda. Add choc. chips, grated Hershey bar, and nuts. Mix well.

Roll into balls and place 2" apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10min. at 375.

I do all my baking on a Silpat. The cookies just slide off and there is no mess.
Cool on a baking rack.
Tip- If you quickly eat them off the rack as they cool, you don't have to find storage containers!

How I Came to Have an Aluminum Christmas Tree

Over the years I have had many different styles of Christmas tree. Primitive, Victorian, even a tree that hung upside down. The last 3 years I have had a retro aluminum tree. I love it!

When I was a kid, it was a great treat to stay with my Great Grandmother. She was born in 1896 which to me as a child made her exotic (and incredibly old). She ate cookies with her cereal in the morning, a bowl of ice cream before bed every night and had a taste for the gaudy. She loved beads and sparkly jewelry and lace. Lots of lace. At Christmas she had a silver aluminum tree. I had never seen one before or anywhere else. The rest of the family found it slightly offensive. I thought it was the most amazing thing I had ever seen. I loved it, it was so her. The trees were already out of fashion when I came along.

Their height of poplularity running roughly from 1959 to around 1962.

So, a few years ago I stumbled on my tree, right before Thanksgiving. I couldn't get it out of my mind. A couple of days later I came home and it was in my living room. Eric had went back and bought it.

My mother still thinks it is atrocious and my kids don't get it but it makes me happy and reminds me of the woman who ate cookies for breakfast and ice cream at bedtime.

Folk Art Tribute Block 4

It's time for block 4. This month's block is a weathervane. I don't think you can get any "folkier" than that. The block finishes at 12" x 12". This is a really fast block. I figured with the holidays, it would be easier for everyone to keep up with a fast block. Be ready to work in January girls, because it will be a bigger block-12" x 48".

Basket Quilts

Baskets- it seems like quilters have had a love of baskets as long as they have quilts. Baskets have been used as design elements in quilting almost from the beginning. Wholecloth quilts often boasted basket designs. Broderie perse quilts were often built around a central motif of flowers in a basket. The earliest, dated, pieced basket quilt is from 1855. The basket design is as varied as the quilters who make it. It can be very primitive to very realistic, pieced or appliqued. Filled with fruit or flowers or empty.

I have loved basket quilts since before I actually started making quilts myself. My latest layer cake pattern with The Star is a basket quilt called "Carsley".

It is made using a layer cake. No additional fabric is required. I used "Wild Rose" by Blackbird Designs. The little baskets are all applique- 2 pieces. The blocks are 4 1/2" finished and are set in a trip around the world setting with a scrappy border. This quilt would also make a great stash buster if you didn't want to use a layer cake. It would also be super easy to enlarge.

Travels in Time

If the quilt above looks familiar, it's because it is one of the quilts I photographed at Houston Market. It is stunning! The quilt was made by Cynthia Collier. She was kind enough to email me with detailed photos and a background story for me to share. Here is the story of the quilt in Cynthia's words and photos.

The "Travels in Time" quilt was inspired by the Baltimore Album quilts of the 1840s and 50s and the chintz broderie perse quilts of a decade earlier. I started out to make a Baltimore album style quilt with the center block and four corner blocks. I was greatly influenced by the Sarah Morrell quilts being reproduced lately and really wanted to do more with toiles and broderie perse. "Travels in Time" morphed into a combination of the two styles, taking its own little travel in time!
My design sources were block patterns from books by Elly Sienkiewicz and a wonderful reproduction fabric from the Winterthur Museum called the Sophia Pierce Collection. Another reproduction toile used in the four corner blocks by Kaye England gives the quilt its name. The center block is from patterns reproduced by The Baltimore Applique Society of the Elizabeth MacCullough Hervy quilt.
The quilt was hand appliqued by myself, and machine long-arm quilted by Cynthia Clark, also of League City, Texas.

100 Blocks Blog Tour

Welcome to the Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks Blog Tour. Boy that's a mouthful.

I bought the 1st issue of 100 Blocks last year and was blown away at all the talent in one place, so I feel very fortunate to be a part of this second issue.

Inside you will find 100- 12" blocks. You can mix and match to your heart's content. The blocks are both pieced and appliqued, so your design possibilities are limitless. This will be a very valuable resource in your quilting library.

My block is called "Bird's Eye View". It is appliqued (of course). It is number 108 and you can find it on page 25.

I think this block would be nice alternated with chain blocks.

My fabrics are from Moda. I used the essential dots for my background and Kansas Troubles for the applique.

Houston Fall Market- The Exhibits

Okay, here is the final Market post. Our last day in Houston we walked through the exhibits. There were several that could not be photographed, such as the stunning Baltimore Album quilts. However, there were several that could be. I do not have names of the makers sorry. (except one.)This quilt is from the Trash to Treasure exhibit. It was made by Barb Vedder, who reads this blog. I have to say it was my favorite of the pineapple quilts.

There was an exhibit of antique patriotic quilts.

This quilt with it's half blocks was so unusual.

There were award winning quilts from the Texas guild.

This quilt was made from a kit circa 1930.

This one caught my eye from across the room. The photo does not do it justice.This Japanese quilt speaks for itself. It took 3 years to complete and was Amazing!!
That's it for Houston. My quilt guild is hosting it's quilt show today and tomorrow. I will have photos from that soon.

Houston Fall Market Pt. 2

Here's the second round of Market photos. The fabric companies have ginormous booths. I don't even know if you could call them booths. Anyway they have samples of the new fabric lines that will be coming out and they have quilts hanging that have been made of the new fabric. They draw quite a crowd naturally since fabric is the basis of the business. Here is the fabulous world of Moda.

Marcus on the left(I am in love with it), Minnick and Simpson in the center, and Barbara Brackman on the right.

The Bunny Hill fabric is adorable.

The center display is Brannock and Patek, Lilac Hill. Blackbird Designs on the right. (Hoping some of that comes my way.)

Kaye England has a new line called Bread and Butter. Love it. Check out the applique quilt in the corner.

Here's Holly Holderman of Lakehouse. Their booth was super cute. That is giant rick-rac around the edges of the tables. So you can see there are some really great fabric lines on the horizon. Alot of it will hit shops around Jan. or Feb.

The second day of Market was of course Halloween. There were lots of people in costume.

This is Pat Sloan with a Halloween headpiece that makes for an interesting photo. Pat was demonstrating her new Edge ruler. Let me tell you guys this is truly a must have! These rulers have one side that is a diamond carbide edge. Every time you cut with your rotary cutter, the blade is sharpened. Very awesome! I don't have to tell you guys that blades are expensive and lose their edge faster than I like. If you see these in your LQS be sure to check them out.

Houston Fall Market Pt.1

Last Friday, I headed to the Kansas City airport to make my way to Houston for Fall Quilt Market. My longtime friend Angi left her home in Nebraska and we met at the airport. This is a night shot outside our hotel. We must have walked a million miles not only in market but throught downtown Houston. It was awesome and awe inspiring. All that talent under one roof. I don't know how shop owners choose. I wanted it all!

This is the park across from the convention center. The weather was fantastic. Ready to head inside?The Kansas City Star did an awesome job as always. Here is a shot of my newest layer cake pattern, "Carsley". It finished just in time for Market. To the right is Cafe Au Lait by Edie McGinnis and Aurelia's Journey from Homestead Hearth.

This next shot is Polly of Minnick and Simpson. They were showing their new line of fabric and patterns. Super cute. Super nice.

Here is my quilt "Selene" in the United Notions booth. They are now carrying all three of my self published patterns. Yippee!

Here is the booth of Homestead Hearth. They are from just about 30 min. from where I live. Their store is a fav. Sue was in the booth but she stepped out of the shot too.

Here we have Carrie Nelson of Miss Rosie's Quilt Co. I met Carrie a couple of years ago. She is a fantastic person. You should have seen the line of people at her book signing. Wow!

I have known Jacquelynne of "The Noble Wife" for about 2 years now but we had never met in person until Market. Jacquelynne has a new line of fabric and patterns to go with it and is also working on a book with the KC Star. Talk about multi-tasking.

This is Jill Finley. She has a new book with the KC Star also. She is holding her "to die for, cute" portfolio pattern. One is on it's way to me. I can't wait for it to get here. Her booth was fresh and gorgeous.

Folk Art Tribute Block 3

Hello Quilters,

I am a little early with the block this month. I leave for Houston early Fri. morning, so it was now or much, much later. This month's block is 24" x24" finished. It is a big block but super easy. Large chunky pieces.

You can see the Fresh version is not completely stitched. Too many things to get done in a very short period of time. You can still get the picture though. Click HERE for the templates.

I have included a rough diagram to show you where the blocks will go in the quilt. This was meant to be helpful but since STUPID blogger keeps turning it sideways, it's not that helpful.

Everyone turn your head faaaarrrr to the right. Anyway, that shows where blocks 1-3 will be in the quilt center. Each month I will add a block and maybe one of those months the diagram will be right side up. That's all I have for now. Stay tuned for Market photos and postings.

Patriot

This is my latest layer cake pattern. It is called Patriot. The fabric is La Petite Ecole from French General. It is not patriotic at all but it sure feels that way once you add all the stars. This is a fast and fun quilt to make. It uses a layer cake only and measures 39"x39". The backgrounds are pieced and the stars all applique. The fabric will be available in Dec. if I am not mistaken.

I pick up the pattern covers from the printer this afternoon and it should be available for order by the end of the week. Once this quilt does the circuit, it will have a home in my living room. I really love it. If you love stars leave me a comment by Wed. 27 and I will pick a winner for the pattern.

On a different note. I wanted to share some photos of my friend Shirley's blocks. She is making Creve Coeur using Wildflower Serenade II from Kansas Troubles.

Scallops Anyone?

I love scalloped borders. I use them quite a bit to finish my applique quilts. I think the soft curves complement the shapes of the applique. This quilt is from my book Geese in the Rose Garden. It is called Rose Parade. My applique group just made a twin size version for the silent auction at our quilt show. When it was time to scallop the borders and put on the binding, they passed the quilt to me. No one wanted to do it. Seems there is another nasty rumor going around. Scalloped borders are NOT hard, quilters.
There are couple of things to keep in mind and then it is smooth sailing.

1. The quilt needs to be quilted first.

2. Mark the scallops on the border. If you are using a pattern, you can trace the template on freezer paper and then use it to mark the scallops. Also, Darlene Zimmerman makes a tool called Easy Scallops that you can use to mark the scallops if you don't have a template.

3.Now you can sew on the binding. Use bias binding and DO NOT cut the scallops. Your quilt will still have a complete border. Line the raw edges of your binding to the drawn scallop line and sew with a 1/4" seam.

4. When you get to the bottom of the valley don't stop right on the line. Remember this line is for the edge of the binding. You are sewing a 1/4" from that, so you need to sew a few stitches past the line and stop with your needle down and turn.

5. Sew out of the valley and continue on. The scallops are very gentle curves and the bias binding has give making it very easy to sew.

6. After the binding is all sewn on, cut away the excess border and turn the binding to the back and hand sew just like you would for any quilt.

7. See- very easy!

Folk Art Tribute BOM Block 2

It is time for Block 2. This is a long block and requires a good size piece of fabric for the basket. There will be several big blocks but this one is the only one with such a large single piece. The block is 12" x 36" finished. Due to the nature of the templates there are two links, one for the basket template and one for the rest. The basket template is in three parts. You will need to join all three and cut on the fold. The vines are made using 1/2" bias tape maker. If you have any questions, shoot me an email. Click for HERE basket. A Nasty Rumor

There is a nasty rumor going around. I am sure you have all heard it. It has been around for awhile. I have taken on the task of squashing the rumor and making sure that people know the truth. I guess that makes me a crusader of sorts. What is this rumor? You ask. Well it goes something like this. (There are variations) Hand applique is hard, tedious and takes Forever! (It is usually followed by the statement- "I don't have the patience for that.") Let me tell you now, this is in no way true. Hand applique is easy! It is much more forgiving than piecing where all the seams have to match and points line up. There is one simple stitch to learn. It is not tedious. It is actually relaxing. You can stitch while you watch tv or talk. And let me tell you Quilters, it is not slow. I am not a slow kind of girl, even without deadlines. I think it's faster than machine because I can work on a block anywhere. I can't always be at my machine. As for requiring patience, I have been called alot of things but patient isn't one of them.

That being said, I finished an applique class this weekend at Sew Sweet Quilt Shop. We used my French Wrens pattern which is great for learning. Everyone used a different layer cake creating totally different looks. Below are samples of their works in progress. They were a great group to work with. Lots of fun and they caught on fast. When I teach it is not my goal to simply teach someone how to make my pattern. It is to teach them a new skill that they will go on to use for many new projects that they may not have tried before.

I have no idea why the one photo turned. I have fought with blogger all morning. Anyway...

Geese Girls

The main quilt from my first book, Geese In The Rose Garden, is a block of the month quilt. It has 6 pieced blocks, 6 applique blocks and a border that is appliqued and pieced. For the last 7 months I have taught this BOM at Specialty Quilts. This Monday was the last segment.

It has been a wonderful journey. There were 19 women who participated. They either had little or no experience with applique. As the months went by I watched their confidence, skills and addiction grow. They are all now excellent at applique and able to tackle any project with confidence. It has been alot of fun and I am thankful to have met them all. I will miss them all. Below are some photos of their blocks.

Wild Rose

I am working on finishing up the latest of my layer cake patterns. It will published as a Hot Off the Press Pattern by the KC Star so I can't show you. It will be available at Market, which is the end of Oct. Since I can't show you the quilt, I thought you might like to see the fabrics.

The line is Wild Rose by Blackbird Designs for Moda. It is fabulous! I generally love all the Blackbird fabrics as they have that vintage, romantic feel, but this one is one of my favorites. It has these gorgous old blues. Small star prints to big florals.I am not usually a yellow girl, but I am absolutely in love with these. They are muted just enough. Not quite mustard but almost. And of course red, gotta have red. This line also has great backgrounds. You can see a sample of them above in the first photo. I can't wait for you to see the new pattern. It has been alot fun to sew. Until later..

Froncie Quinn

Last year, I served as Vice CEO of my guild. One of my duties was to find a speaker for our Fall Special Speaker. This person was to do a lecture and workshop. I was fortunate to be able to contract Froncie Quinn of Vermont. She is a super nice woman. She gave a fun and very interesting lecture on 1980 Quilter Hall of Fame inductee, Florence Peto. Below is a representation of Peto's famous Calico Garden.

Wondering how Froncie came to have such a famous quilt in her possession? Well, she just so happens to be a licenced pattern maker for the Shelburne Museum, Old Sturbridge Village, and the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum. What does this mean? you ask. Well it means that Froncie's job is to work up close and personal with the quilts in those museum collections. She then writes patterns to reproduce those quilts to the exact detail. She also makes a sample of each quilt to show. Usually a little smaller than the original. Tough job huh?

She is an absolute authority on these quilts and their makers. Her pattern company is called Hoopla Patterns. The patterns are written with directions for today's quiltmaker as well as historical directions. You can find more about Froncie and her patterns at http://www.hooplapatterns.com/ . Folk Art Tribute- The Particulars

I have had several emails regarding the BOM, so here are the particulars.
1. The blocks vary in size and complexity. Several are 12", one is 24"x24", 12"x36", you get the picture.
2. I will post new blocks around the 1st of the month. I can't give you a set date because I would miss it. It all depends on my deadlines, travel, life, etc.
3.The quilt center WITHOUT borders will measure 48"x 60". Not sure yet what the finished size will be because I am not sure what I am going to do with the borders. That's just how I work.
4.It will be a 10 month program. 9 blocks and then the borders.

Folk Art Tribute BOM

How about a new FREE BOM? The quilt is called Folk Art Tribute. I will show it in 2 different colorways. One in a traditional colorway and the other in what I call Fresh. Fresh is a little brighter. This time around I am using Google docs to host the templates. This should eliminate the problems we had with Scrbd. The blocks for this quilt will vary in size and complexity. This first block is 12"x12" finished and is pretty simple. Some of the blocks are quite large- 12" x 48".

I think this will be a fun quilt to stitch. Once again, I encourage everyone to USE YOUR STASH. Keep it free if you can. Both of my colorways will be made entirely from my stash. However, there are no rules. So if you feel the need to shop for fabric, go for it. CLICK HERE for the templates.

Cottage Charm

Hello All! I am very happy to announce that my latest book is available for order. The title is "Cottage Charm- Cozy Quilts and Cross Stitch Projects". I am very pleased with the way it turned out. There are three quilts and each has a cross stitch project to complement it. I have been cross stitching forever so it was nice to be able to include some designs in the book.

I was also very fortunate to be able to do our photo shoot at one of my favorite shops. It is called Curious Sofa, and it is in Prairie Village Ks. The owner, Deb Dusenberry was kind enough to let us loose in the store and we got some fantastic photos. Quilt Sampler Magazine

Just in case you didn't know, I am easily pleased. I take great joy in small things. One of my favorite things ever is the Quilt Sampler magazines. They come out in the spring and fall and showcase 10 of the most outstanding quilt shops. I have all of the magazines that have ever been in print. Usually, I know right when they will be in shops and head out that very day. Most of my issues have come straight from the shipping box. I know that sounds a little obsessive but I could have worse obsessions. These magazines are filled with gorgeous photos of the shops as well as patterns. They also tell the story of the quilt shop and it's start. I am a sucker for a good story.

This is The Woolen Needle in Williamsburg Iowa. I have made it a point to visit at least one shop from each issue. I live in Missouri, so I think this one might be the one.

As I said before I love and collect all of these magazines but this one is a little more special.

See there underlined in read. That is my editor, Kimber Mitchell. She has been my editor for both of my books with the KC Star and will be my editor on the third that I am working on now. She also edits and writes for Merideth(APQ). She was working on this around the time we started editing my book, Cottage Charm. She is a whirlwind! So run out and get yourself a copy. They should be unboxed by now.

P.S. The fabric peaking out from behind the magazine is La Petite Ecole from French General. This is a very fun fabric. Look for a layer cake pattern using it sometime soon.

Creve Coeur

Hello! I have finished the next layer cake pattern. The sample is quilted and the pattern written. It just has to be printed. This was a fun quilt to stitch, it goes together quickly. It would be great for someone new to applique. It measures 46"x46". It uses one layer cake and 1/2 yrd of green print for the sashing. I love the Maison de Garance fabrics but can definitely see it in alot of different colors. It would be a great kitchen quilt. Hmm... I do have that one wall....

Winners and Maison de Garance

Good Morning! Sorry to be slow to post the winners. I want to thank everyone for all the lovely comments and for playing along. Without further ado, the winners are Sinta Renee and Terry in So. Cal. If you guys will email me your addresses I will get the patterns in the mail.

The quilt top for the next layer cake pattern is finished. I am planning to start quilting it this afternoon. "Planning" being the operative word. You know how that goes, best intentions and all. Anyway, the fabric line is Maison de Garance by French General. Roughly translated that is House of Madder. The line is gorgeous. Madder reds and browns with a touch of green. The background prints range from a very light cream to a tan. There is everything from a linen look to an elaborate floral.

As soon as the pattern is ready I will post it. If there is interest, I will probably give away a couple of those as well. These patterns are new to the market, so if you want one and can't find it, just email me and you can order one directly from me. Until next time..

Selene

Here is my latest pattern. It is called Selene. It uses one layer cake and 1/2 yrd. of black for the border strips. As I said in the last post, the fabric is Luna Notte. The fabric is gorgeous, don't let my crappy photo fool you.

The quilt finishes at 38"x 51" and the applique blocks are 18" finished. When Moda first sent me layer cakes to design with I was unsure of how to make them work for me. I am now really loving them. The fabric lover in me is happy to get a piece of each fabric in the line. I also really like being able to do traditional style applique in a project that finishes rather quickly.

The patterns are now ready to go so I think a giveaway is in order.

For the Love of Quilting

For those of you who don't know I am a hand quilter. I love the process of hand quilting as much as I love the result. There is just something soothing about the rhythm of the needle rocking back in forth through the layers and I love how you can feel it begin to be a quilt as you make progress. Before I started quilting for publication, I hand quilted everything and I had never had anyone quilt anything for me until my first book. It may be the control freak in me that makes it hard for me to hand over my top and let someone else finish it. I don't know, but it is hard for me to do. I am weird about some things. Well, ,maybe more than some...

Anyway, with deadlines it is really hard to find the time to hand quilt all my quilts, especially since I do hand applique. I am pretty fast but it still just can't happen. In my first book, Geese in The Rose Garden, I handquilted the main quilt only. In my next book, due out at the end of the month, one of the three quilts is hand quilted. That kind of eases my mind so to speak if I can quilt at least one.

I am currently working on 5 new patterns using layer cakes. The one I am doing right now is nearly quilted. I machine quilted the sample for French Wrens, so I really wanted to hand quilt this one. To make it do-able. I am using the big stitch method. I really enjoy this. It allows me to hand quilt but at a much faster pace.

For those of you who have not tried it, it is the same process as regular handquilting. You use a hoop and rock your needle exactly the same way. The difference being you are using a pearl cotton thread that allows you to take large stitches, speeding up the process greatly. I use a number 8 pearl cotton and an embroidery needle. You get a quilt that softly drapes and has great texture.

These photos show a sneak peak at the first new pattern. It is called Selene and uses a layer cake and a tiny bit of yardage for some sashing borders. The fabric is Luna Notte by 3 Sisters for Moda. I LOVE it. I have been a 3 Sisters fan always but this line is probably my favorite since Wuthering Heights and Chocolat. The black is gorgeous. I love black fabrics and good ones are hard to find sometimes. The paisley is fantastic. The precuts are in shops now and the yardage shoud be available soon. As soon as I get the pattern printed I will be doing a give away. Stay tuned.

Good things come to those who wait or..The Big Reveal- Vicksburg

Here is the finished product. I managed to not buy any fabric for my version. I did have to do some scrambling and fabric dying in the end to get my backgrounds but I think it looks okay. I wanted an old look anyway. I will try keep this simple.

Sashing strips-cut 36- 1 1/2"x 12 1/2" strips for sashing. Nuetral-background type

Cornerstones- cut 12- 1 1/2" squares for the cornerstones. Navy

1/2 Cornerstones along the edges (before you attach borders) Cut 3- 2 5/8" squares. Then cut on the diagonal twice to yield 4 triangles from each. 12 triangles total for the cornerstones around the edge. Navy

For your side setting triangles you will need to cut 2-18 1/2" squares. Cut on the diagonal twice to yield a total of 4 setting triangles. Neutral - background

For your corner triangles you will need to cut 2- 9 3/8" squares. Cut on the diagonal once to yield a total of 4 corner triangles. Neutral- background

I recommend laying out all the blocks, triangles and sashing before sewing. Then sew together.

Here is the link for the applique templates. We are still with Scribd for now, cross your fingers. I was able to print with no problem. When you open the document make sure it is set at 100% when you print so they are the correct size.

You will cut 4- 7 1/2"x7 1/2" squares for the border applique corners. Nuetral- background

Cut 12- 7 1/2"x 18 7/8" rectangles for the swag border blocks. Neutral-background

If it appears some of my swags don't line up, it's because they are not all sewn down. Some are pinned. I didn't want you to wait for me to finish. I have a million other projects with deadlines.

On Thursday I will start teaching my pattern French Wrens in a couple of workshops. I wanted to show a few options. First, if you don't have a layer cake or your shop doesn't carry them you can very easily get a similar look. Have your shop cut you 10" strips (just an in. over a 1/4 yrd) of ten different fabrics. This will give you the same amount of fabric as a layer cake. It will also give you a good variety. Make sure at least 4 of the fabrics are suitable for backgrounds.

Here I am using Civil War Homefront from Barbara Brackman for Moda. The green on top is from Judy Rothermel. It gives the French Wrens a totaly different look from the original.

Block 10 Reel

Here we are with Block 10, the final block. I want to thank you all for quilting along and especially thank you for sticking it out with the tech. problems lately. Scribd has been the host for all my templates and it has been easy and user friendly until lately. I have tried to work out the problems but it is out of my hands. If you can tough it out, we are almost finished. I suggest printing the templates rather than downloading and if you have problems, just email me and I will send them to you as a pdf.

I will be a little quicker with the next post. Next time we will do the sashing and the borders and your quilt top will be finished. I will post most of the ifo here so you don't have to do much downloading. It has been fun seeing everyone's blocks and I can't wait to see the finished tops. I am sure some of you will finish differently than I have. For those of you who like to work ahead and plan on following my example, you will need 36- 1 1/2" x 12 1/2" strips for your sashing.

Okay girls, thanks for your patience. Without further ado, here is block 8 and the link. It is a cactus block with only 3 templates. Remember that all blocks finish at 12" and are set on point.

I want to give my heartfelt thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts, prayers, and patience. My mother is doing well for now. She begins chemo at the end of the month and then we'll go from there.
The projects for the new book are finished and we have completed the photo shoot. Let me say, we got some fabulous shots and I can't wait for you all to see the new book.
